KIRO Oncology is an advanced robotic system that automates the compounding of cytotoxic medications, ensuring precision, safety, and reliability in oncological therapies. With a compact, clean, and ergonomic design (awarded with an iF Design Award in 2016), it protects both healthcare workers and patients by minimizing exposure and error. Our design work focused on integrating usability, spatial efficiency, and identity within sterile environments, supporting the delicate balance between performance and human-centered design.

KIRO Oncology combines strict engineering controls, gravimetric verification, barcode readers, cameras, and self-cleaning mechanisms, to deliver consistent accuracy throughout the compounding process. Its design allows handling of diverse containers (vials, bags, pumps) while maintaining a sealed, automated environment that prevents contamination and cross-exposure. Every element (shape, color, materials) was selected to convey reliability, cleanliness, and efficiency, reinforcing KIRO’s role as a trusted partner in oncological care.
